iPhone 5: Features You Want to See

In our last article, we discussed iPhone 5 features that we hoped would be included in the new iPhone 5, which we’ve heard will be released this summer. We also asked for the features that you, our readers, most want to see. And you certainly didn’t disappoint with your suggestions, as you mentioned many features that didn’t make it onto our previous list. Your most wanted iPhone 5 features inspired us to take a closer look at these features.

New Siri Features in iPhone 5

When Siri was announced for the iPhone 4S, it was touted as being a personal assistant that would make your life easier. Although Siri is quite good at dictating text messages, making appointments, and setting reminders, it is limited. You can’t use Siri to open apps, nor can you use Siri to find movie times or play music in an alternative music application like Pandora. Siri also won’t read email messages or manage the battery by turning off certain features when the battery life gets low. The bottom line is this: while Siri is a very neat feature, most iPhone users want to see a much improved version of Siri on the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 Siri

Integrated Turn by Turn Navigation

The iPhone’s built-in Maps application has largely remained unchanged from the one that was featured in the original iPhone—and this is something many users want changed in the iPhone 5. One of Android’s main advantages is the fact that Android features a built-in turn-by-turn navigation feature. iPhone users have been complaining about the lack of integrated turn by turn navigation for years now, so here’s hoping Apple listens and implements the feature in the iPhone 5.

Customizable User Interface

Another thing that Android has (and the iPhone doesn’t) is a customizable user interface (UI). Android users can add widgets and install custom application icon sets to make their phone unique. This is a feature that many iPhone users want to see implemented in one way or another on the iPhone 5. Imagine being able to customize nearly every aspect of your iPhone 5: you could have every useful widget on your iPhone screen so that you don’t have to go through the hassle of opening applications.

Indicator Light

The BlackBerry, as well as some Android smartphones, comes with an indicator light that lights up whenever a new text, call, or email is received. This is particularly useful for the times where you receive a message while your iPhone is in silent mode, and so you don’t remember to check your messages. If Apple decides to implement the indicator light on the iPhone 5, it’s likely that the light would be right next to the front-facing camera.

Physical Switches

Some iPhone users are holding out hope for another physical switch on the iPhone 5 beyond the silencer switch. The switch could be used to shut off WiFi, disable the GPS, or even to turn on Airplane Mode. We’re not sure that the iPhone 5 will have another switch, but the idea of being able to turn specific iPhone 5 features on or off with the flick of a switch sure is a nice one.

What Do You Think?

Which of these features would you most like to see in the iPhone 5? What other Siri functionality would you like to see implemented in the iPhone 5? Leave us a comment below and give us your opinion.

If a new switch is considered, it would be nice to be able to customize that switch in the main program menu. You could have it programed to do what you want it to do. Just like the article said; wifi, gps, airplane mode, the camera… the list could be enormous. That sounds like a cool idea.

Siri does not set a reminder for an appointment so it's useless for appointments. I end up having to go into the appointment and setting up a reminder anyway. I want to see that changed. Also I would like to have the feature of being able to create groups for texting and emailing like you can create in mail on the iMac.

How about all of them? Apple is a bunch of crooks who only release small updates at a time to allow for future models to have new features….how about implement all of the features you can think of into each model and refine with each new model? Or push yourself to think of new ideas instead of just putting ideas off for future release? Crooks

iTunes needs to be much more user friendly. iTunes is the iphone's biggest drawback! Not user friendly moving pictures to/from iPhone, organizing music is a few examples. See the simplicity Android handles this in their software.

It would be good to have dual sim card in iPhone 5 as it would be more convenient to carry a single phone than 2 phones (iPhone and other non smart phone) around since many iphone users have 2 phones due to the non lasting battery. Therefore, most iPhone users carry two phones for emergency cause. Of course, we also hope to see the iPhone 5 batteries to be more lasting than the previous version.

It is also good to see if iPhone 5 has anti scratch screen like a watch that use sapphire crystal. Thus, there's no need for screen protector.

Scratch a new button idea, iphones are supposed to be minimalist in the button category, hence the touch screen which nearly every other smart phone has mimicked. Lets work on gestures. I have an air, the most recent version and love all the gesture options, why not rotate images and web pages with swipes, independent of the giro.

It's on the back of the phone though. So in order to really know that someone has sent you a message or called you the phone would need to be facing down.

I say Apple needs to keep doing what they're doing because……for one I love their products and so dies everyone else and TWO almost every company copies exactly what apple does. Soon as the iPad came out..every electronic company there was made their own tablet…some of the tablets even had a home button.

True but not true, apple has a long way to come still, there iOS software is amazing but it still ahs its ups and downs. People copy apple because they are leading in technology. They can still take ideas off of other people while other people take ideas off them. Also they add on to those ideas.

No one seems to mention the things that are important to the non-high speed users. Like blue tooth printing, and updating without iTunes. If I could print using bluetooth, I could get rid of my landline.

I'd like to see the phone have a plastic or metal back rather than a glass back. I actually like the back of the 3G better, and it seems less damage-prone. Also, many of the iPods have metal backs, so it seems like would be possible.

Switches dumb. Customizable UI dumb. Switches take away from the sleek and smooth design! If you want a customizable UI what stopping you from switching to android?! It would change the OS completely to me. Apple is made to be simple, contemporary, and sleek.

In IOS 6 the most inportant feature I would like to see is that MAP is added to the bluetooth protocol so that all the Ford and Lincoln, owners could actually use the texting/mobile office functions as well as access to contact photos in their vehicles sync systems. Along with other Auto manufacturers now utilizing similar type text/ mobile office technology, it would be nice to be able to use a $300.00 phone that fully functions with a $20,000 to $60,000 vehicle.

With texting being a huge safety concern these days and Auto manufacturers now adding hands free ability to listen to and vocally send text responses…. you would think Apple would listen. There are several new android phones that mesh with this technology now, and Apple should listen and follow suit before they lose buyers. Because if it is a choice between trading in my $300.00 Iphone or my car…. I will tell you Apple will lose that one to android.
