iPhone 5 May Arrive in the Fall of 2012

As with other iPhone releases, we’ve been hearing a lot of conflicting news about the iPhone 5 as of late. While we reported earlier this month that the iPhone 5 would be released in the summer of 2012–to coincide with Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC)–we’re now hearing that this may not be the case after all. That’s because several sources are now reporting that the iPhone 5 will come out in September or October of 2012. As with many rumors, this may not come true; however, we’ve decided to provide a closer look into this possible fall debut for the iPhone 5.

Japanese Blog Says iPhone 5 Will Debut in Fall

The Japanese blog Macotakara.jp reported on Monday of this week that the iPhone 5 would be coming out in September or October 2012. According to Macotakara, they were given this information from a “very reliable source in Asia.” The source told Macotakara that the iPhone 5 would likely come out in one of these two months and that–perhaps even more importantly–this cycle would continue for future iPhone releases.

iPhone 5

In other words, according to the source, Apple is completely abandoning their previous new iPhone summer release schedule in favor of a new iPhone every fall schedule. That, of course, contradicts what many other sources have been reporting–that the iPhone 5 would mark the return of the new iPhone every June schedule Apple previously had.

Why a Fall Debut Makes Sense

The idea of releasing the iPhone 5 (as well as future iPhones) in the fall actually isn’t that crazy. In fact, it might just be a great idea–from a business standpoint–for Apple. That’s because the iPhone 4S was extremely successful in terms of sales, even moreso than the other iPhones. The iPhone 4S sold more units in the first 24 hours that it was on sale than any other Apple product. Over four million iPhone 4S units were sold during the first weekend.

Not only that, but sales of the iPhone 4S continued well into the holiday season of 2011. If the iPhone 5 were released in October 2012, it is very likely that the sales of the iPhone 5 would also continue well into the holiday season. This would mean big profits for Apple.

One other reason why a fall iPhone 5 debut makes sense is that it would be roughly a year after the release of the 4S. Many feel that releasing the iPhone 5 less than a year after the 4S–as would happen with a summer 2012 release–would upset a lot of customers.

Why a Fall Debut Doesn’t Make Sense

On the flip side of things, a fall debut for the iPhone 5 doesn’t make sense because the launch of the new iPhone has become such a staple at Apple’s WWDC event in June of each year. If Apple were to release the iPhone 5 in October, they obviously could not promote the device at WWDC in June. What’s more, Apple would have to plan a separate event in September/October of each year just to present the new iPhone for that year. That could be a big hassle.

What’s Most Likely: Fall or Summer

To be honest, we feel at this point that the iPhone 5 release date is really a toss up. It makes sense for Apple to wait a year to release the iPhone 5, which means a fall 2012 iPhone 5 release date. However, it also makes sense for Apple to return to the WWDC-centered release date by bringing out the iPhone 5 in June 2012. And given all of the reports we’ve received about the iPhone 5 already going into production, a June 2012 release date seems most likely. So if we had to predict a release date for the iPhone 5 right now, we’d still say June 2012.

  1. Hurry

Well I am hoping my 3GS will hold out until the summer 2012. The battery charge is getting shorter and weaker and often when it gets below 20 percent it may shut down until recharged. I have already shut off all the automatic updates and other drains on the battery but must still re-charge each night to make it through the next day. Hoping the summer (June) date is correct and don't know that I could wait until Sept/Oct. I wonder how many others are in the same boat as me?

I am in exactly the same boat! I have a 3GS & was all set to get a new 5 last fall when . . . the 4GS dropped. I don't like the chunky 4 design, and aside from Siri, there's nothing about the 4GS that I felt warranted the purchase. My 3GS is definitely showing its age . . . it's increasingly slow, and the battery life is fading. Am desperately hoping June will be the TRUE REDESIGNED 5 release date, as I do NOT want to get the "Malibu Stacy with a new hat" (you Simpsons fans will know what I'm talking about) that is the 4GS.

I'm right there with you. My 3GS logic board is dying so my phone shuts off at 85%. The battery is perfectly fine, but the phone doesn't know that. It's like having a land line again…I'm always corded to a wall. ;)

My 3GS is still holding up, so far… I want to wait to get the iPhone 5 but I fear that it wouldn't hold up until October and then I'll be forced to get the iPhone 4S… As much as having a personal assistant (I want SIRI so bad) is important to me, I'm not dropping several hundred dollars to not have the latest technology. And as always, once you don't have the latest technology, you don't have the latest accessories or apps or any other "oh so necessary" gadgets that goes in tandem with such important equipment. So, I definitely agree that the iPhone 5 should hurry up and come out in June!

Both theories make sense… Feelings aside, it seems that the fall launch would make more sense for Apple, strategically. Personally, it disappoints me because I've been holding off on changing my 3GS since last fall hoping the iPhone 5 would be launched. Too bad I may have to wait a few more months – whilst hoping my bashed up 3GS will hold the run! :-/

I think it would be dumb to wait until the end of year for the phone to come out. If they are going to wait that long it will be old technology, there will be faster and newer stuff out there that is better. From the specs of what the iphone is supposed to be it is already compareable to what the samsung android phone is. How much better quality of android phones will be released by next october? I love apple products and I really do want the new iphone, but why would anybody want to purchase an outdated phone? If apple waits too long I really think it will hurt their sales than help it.

It would be smart to release it in the summer because there's another part of iPhone users who didn't upgrade and still wants the next big iPhone. So why make us suffer for basically 2yrs. The iPhone 5 should be ready by now since apple have been working on it since 2011.

While I too wish Apple would release the iPhone 5 this summer, before my 3GS konks out, marketing logic says Apple will do a 3rd gen iPad release this Spring, hype the 5 at the WWDC in June to create a wild pre-order, pre- sale frenzy and release the 5 in October to max X-mas sales.

it should be released in the fall so that all the people who bought the 4s can savor their phone being "the latest" for at least a year! Besides, I want the summer to at least be over so that I can use the stipend from my internship to buy it! –A broke college student looking to have the latest =)

I'm not sure basing the release in Fall on the fact that the 4S sold well then is entirely correct. The 4S sold well at this time as stock was available. Unlike previous releases where unless you were lucky on day one you had to go on a waiting list. Apple got it right and had plenty of stock available, if it had been released in Summer with the same stock levels I'm sure it would have sold just as well.

I'm really hoping for sooner than later. My 3GS is starting to struggle, newer apps are starting to push the boundaries of its abilities. Since the update to iOS5 the music player has also been running very slow, looking forward to the new phone so I don't have to put up with that.

Well a skeptic will read this post and say that sounds unverifiable but I work for the largest carrier and we all saw first hand a prototype of the iPhone 5 and got to tinker with it a little bit. Now on our current network it won't support the lte because of dual sim cards but the YouTube video where you see the holograms would be the closest thing to it feature wise and I due mean to put emphasis on holograms that u can type and play with apps and Siri will be a guy and a girl this go around but physically it looks more like the htc thunderbolt I would say and the guy that had the phone works for Verizon but the part that test out the phone to see how we like it and he said the earliest we'd See it was in June and you can take this with a grain of salt but I don't care either way but the phone will revolutionize how you see phones today and it is going to make heads spin.

The iPhone 5 was Steve Jobs' baby. The iPhone 5 will be launch Oct 5th 2012 in memory of him. If it makes sense sales wise then why should they launch it at the WWDC in June ? The company has more money than they know what to do with and since it seems like it's going to be a pretty big deal in terms of novelties, improvements and design, it will totally justify going through another meeting to present the iPhone 5. That's my guess since we are all guessing out of thin air right now !

The Iphone 5 needs to come out ASAP!! So many rumors of it's release date whether it's fall or summer (PREFERABLY SUMMER) I feel is making everyone impatient and more willing to switch carriers and buy different phones such as the Galaxy.. Personally, I am one of those persons that has been waiting ever so patiently and this fall/ summer debate isn't helping apple's case at all.. I feel the sooner the BETTER!!!

Honestly, I've been holding onto my iphone 3GS for a good two years, and it's pretty much broken. If I bought the 4S now, I would have to wait 18 months to get the 5. It would be very much appreciated if the iphone 5 will be released in the summer so I don't have to wait a third year, or more if I bought the 4S, if it were to be released in the fall.

In terms of making record breaking sales, I think fall makes sense, but there are so many people who have been waiting for the iPhone 5 and didn't upgrade to iPhone 4s who will need to upgrade soon… so hopefully June! The 4s is beautiful, but lacking so many of the new features people want (mostly 4g lte?). Crossing my fingers for a sooner release date!

If the iPhone 5 is production ready, it should be released in June. You don't hold onto technology for four months and let it get dated. The sooner everybody buys the iphone 5, the sooner everybody will buy the iPhone 6, and so on. And droid has 4G out there now. They risk losing sales by waiting. Some people aren't going to wait. Theyll buy a Droid.
