iPhone 5 Might Get 3D Camera

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from reporting news on the iPhone 5 here, it’s that Apple’s pending and current patents can teach us a lot about what the iPhone 5 might have. We’ve previously reported on the NFC patent, which means that the iPhone 5 will likely have NFC technology. Now it’s time to look at another possible iPhone 5 feature: advanced 3D object recognition. We still don’t know if Apple intends to use the 3D object technology in the iPhone 5, though to us it seems likely as Apple wants the iPhone 5 to stick out from the previous iPhones. And if the iPhone 5 actually does come with 3D technology, it could be a very big deal for possible iPhone 5 owners.

iPhone 5 3D Imaging Camera – The Facts

According to the report released late this week by Patently Apple, the new cameras will “utilize new depth-detection sensors such as LIDAR, RADAR and Laser that will create stereo disparity maps in creating 3D imagery.” Not only that, but the cameras will reportedly use “Advanced chrominance and luminance Sensors for superior color accuracy.”

What this means is that images taken with either the front or rear camera will be far more accurate in terms of color. Although the current iPhone 4S camera does a fairly good job of capturing the colors accurately in images, the iPhone 5 3D Imaging Camera will likely do an even better job of this. Which means that the iPhone 5 camera might just be more comparable with some of the pricey point-and-shoot cameras we see on the market. Not only that, but the iPhone 5 will be capable of taking eye-popping 3D images and videos, which is a feature that many smartphones are lacking.

iPhone 5 May Also Get Facial Recognition

Here’s a cool thought: rather than having to type in a passcode each and every time you want to unlock your iPhone 5, wouldn’t it be much easier to simply look at the front camera and have the iPhone5 automatically unlock because it recognizes you? This is something that might just be possible with the reported 3D camera, as the camera apparently is capable of recognizing facial features.

Now, of course, it’s worth mentioning that the idea of facial recognition as a means of securely locking or unlocking a device is not new. It’s been a part of laptop technology for several years now. However, in the case of laptops making use of facial recognition, it’s generally considered to be quite flawed as it may not recognize an individual if, for instance, the lighting is bad. And on the other hand, it might incorrectly recognize the wrong individual. The iPhone 5 facial recognition technology is thought to be different as Apple has a special way of implementing it to ensure accuracy.

Facial Gestures May Also Be Recognized By iPhone 5

Not only is facial recognition technology in the works–but so is a form of facial gesturing recognition. That means facial gestures–such as smiling, frowning, laughing etc.–may be automatically recognized by the iPhone 5. The possibilities for such a technology are endless. While support of facial gestures certainly isn’t confirmed at this point in the iPhone 5, it seems likely that if the iPhone 5 is capable of merely recognizing faces, it will also be able to tell the difference between the many different facial gestures.
