iPhone 5 Will Get 4.6 inch Retina Display

For months now, we’ve heard whispers about the iPhone 5 getting a bigger display than the previous iPhones. However, one question has always remained: just how big will the iPhone 5 display be? Now that we’re getting closer to the iPhone 5 release, we’re seeing more information trickle in about the device. The newest rumor, just released today by Reuters, is that the iPhone 5 will get a 4.6 inch Retina display, making it the first iPhone to receive a display over 4 inches. Although many rumors that have been reported before about the iPhone 5 have been 50-50 in terms of credibility, it seems like this one may hold more weight because it comes from such a credible source.

iPhone 5 Getting Bigger Display, Says Maeil Business Newspaper and Reuters

This is the first we’ve heard of a 4.6″ iPhone 5, though unlike previous rumors this one is based on Apple reportedly placing orders to itsĀ suppliers. Quoting an unnamed, but reliable industry source, the Maeil Business Newspaper reported tonight that the iPhone 5 will get a 4.6″ inch display as Apple has decided on the bigger display. Reuters then relayed this information in an article of their own tonight, therefore giving the rumor a bit more credibility.

According to the South Korean newspaper, Apple likely decided on the 4.6″ iPhone 5 display to compete with other Android smartphones that feature displays between 4-5″.

How Much Bigger Will The iPhone 5 Be?

With a 4.6″ inch display, many would think that the iPhone 5 will be bigger than normal. That’s not necessarily going to be the case, as Apple has shown in the past that they can be creative to add new features without bulking up the size of the device. In the case of a bigger iPhone 5 display, Apple has a few options to implement one without drastically changing the form factor of the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5

The first option is to reduce the size of other components inside the device to make more room for the display components. Apple could easily do this with a smaller dock connector.

The second option is to slightly lengthen the iPhone 5 to match the bigger display. This would likely mean a longer, slimmer phone. Apple probably wouldn’t be too opposed to this idea as the iPhone 5 would still fit well in the pockets and purses of its users, while being only a little bigger.

The third (and most likely) option to implement the 4.6″ iPhone 5 display would be to simply extend the screen to previous unused areas of the device. If you look at the iPhone 4S, you’ll notice that the iPhone 4S has a lot of blank space around the screen. If Apple were to use some of this space, they could easily add another inch of screen space.

Size Difference Between the iPhone 5 and 4S

Although some Apple and iPhone enthusiasts may know the size of their device’s screen by heart, many don’t….especially since the iPhone 4S (and all previous iPhones) come with such an oddly sized screen. The iPhone 4S came with a 3.5″ display, so a 4.6″ iPhone 5 would have a display that is over an inch bigger than the previous model. That’s a very sizable difference.

What Do You Think?

Would you buy a 4.6″ iPhone 5 or do you think it’s too big? Leave us a comment below and make your opinion heard.

I think a bigger form factor benefits Apple as well. They can stuff more components into the device (hello wireless charging!) but still claim that they made it bigger solely because of the screen. I doubt many users will be intimidated by an extra .3 inches. As you say, ti will still fit in pockets and purses.

Bigger display is better, though want 4.6 inches cause problems, iPhone 5 should have 3.75( or 3.8), iPhone 6 should have 4.0, iPhone 7 should have 4.25( or 4.3), iPhone 8 should have the 4.6(or 4.5 to 4.8) iPhone 9 should have 4.6 to 4.8, iPhone 10 should celebrate 5 inches and stay 5 inches for next few modules, maybe till a iphad(iPhone + iPad combined) this would be great and apple can have the inbetween iPhone 5s,6s,7s,8s,9s,10s••• and so on(even iphads)(apple could have Luther names like iPhone lte.

Building a phone with a 4.6" screen while only increasing the size of the phone itself slightly is a great idea if Apple can capture most of the front of the phone as screen. There are phones out there right now with 4.5" screens and a few with 4.7" screens that work fine depending on the needs of the individual. I would definitely replace my 4s with a 4.6" iPhone 5.

I don't really agree with Curtis that the display should get bigger every time like what's the point Apple is all about satisfying customers so give them the best screen. Why would the celebrate 5 inches? What if they don't like that? Just my opinion.
P.S. About the screen size, as long as it's 4 in. or longer and fits in my pocket, I'm fine.

My friend has a HTC Sensation XL. The phone is extreme in size but if thats around 5" and fits snug into a pocket and is also not really heavy then I believe iPhone should be similar in the size and weight.

there is much to iphone than megapxel or HD. rather a 4.1′ will suffice. the features that make it a classs apart are from not only from the R&D of Apple but also the creative business-to-mind applications that keep a human happy. hope steve must’ve left a panoramic pandora-box.
